Am I the ethics police? No, I really don't think so. I suppose my name I chose is rather curious to many. I once was part of a policing type of group that was suppose to expose frauds. However, I found there were many problems with doing this. Mostly, the public really was not so keen on believing most paranormal phenomena claims and always had great doubt already. It was not really necessary to oust anyone. Claims that come in on such fraud, are often never substantiated, but, a slew of attacks can be leveled at some very good people, when it merely LOOKS like it seems plausible that they faked something. At times, there are very much errors of thinking on presenting what some think is evidence of wrong doing. In the process of running a yahoo group, named the Paranormal Police, I had learned a lot, both good and bad of what happens out there between groups and people and the dog eat dog type of feuding. Sad to say, I was part of that type of feuding. It can be easy to get caught up in. Usually people get caught up in some sort of feud, just by sticking up for a friend. I have learned that to truly get to the base of a problem, you truly need to be unbiased and see both sides. I learned that often what others report as fraud, is nothing more then assumptions and accusations of what they suppose. At times, there are huge problems with cruelty issues out there when one group attacks another. There are groups that have formed for no reason, then to distroy people and take every chance to do so. While I still believe that sometimes, you need to be vocal against frauds and those who take advantage of people, the truth is, what happens is a all out scale attack on everything paranormal. Or so it seems to me.
So what is my purpose you may ask? Ethics tends to be very subjective, depending on what side you are viewing from or even what family values you grow up with. I'm not about to be out there pushing my own brand of what I think is right on others. I do however, look into when people make claims of fraud, claims of attacks at others very viciously (sometimes to every person that is known out there) and I support those who I feel, deserve my support, as they are sincere in what they are doing as far as I can see. I am not supporting them based on them doing everything the way I feel they should. Nor, do I think that is necessary.
I am a lone person in what I am doing. I have no team. It is only I, Darlene, that do this. My main goal, is to support the field of researchers and perhaps bring some light to the truth of the problems in the field. While I see some instances of people truly defrauding the public, it is truly rarer then some would have you feel. However, people have differing opinions.
This field tends to encompass religious and spiritual beliefs, that can often cause a lot of problems between groups and between people. Some groups are scientifically based (even if not truly scientific compared to some), while others are completely spiritually based. There is no wrong way to investigate the mysterious world. There are just different approaches.
For the record, I am deffinately more spiritually motivated then by scientific study. But, don't get me wrong, I love science. It is just that I tend to put more stalk into what I feel myself, then any tool. I also use my own cultural background from growing up in what I do. I believe that I am not alone out there in this at all.
Ethics is not me behaving and being some sort of guru. It is only a name that I chose that I thought represented something of what I wanted to say publicly. We need ethics.
